Working Principle

Heating principle: The heating system raises the furnace temperature to the set tempering temperature; common heating methods include electric heating and gas heating. During the heating process, the shaft absorbs heat, causing its temperature to rise gradually.

Tempering principle: After quenching and other heat treatments, the shaft is reheated to a specified temperature and held at that temperature for a certain period, causing microstructural changes within the material. This process relieves the internal stresses generated during quenching, enhances the shaft’s toughness and dimensional stability, and improves its overall mechanical properties.

Cooling principle: After tempering is completed, the shaft is cooled using different cooling methods—such as air cooling or oil quenching—in accordance with process requirements, thereby achieving the desired microstructure and mechanical properties.

Structural Composition

Heating system: This comprises heating elements and a temperature control unit. Heating elements, such as electric heating coils and gas burners, convert electrical or gaseous energy into thermal energy to heat the shafts within the furnace; the temperature control unit, in turn, uses temperature sensors to continuously monitor the furnace temperature and automatically adjusts the power of the heating elements or the gas flow rate based on the setpoint, thereby ensuring precise temperature control.

Furnace structure: Typically consists of an outer shell and a furnace lining. The outer shell is generally fabricated by welding steel plates and structural steel sections, providing mechanical support and protection; the furnace lining is made of refractory materials and thermal insulation materials to minimize heat loss, maintain stable furnace temperatures, and resist high-temperature erosion of the furnace structure.

Conveying equipment: Used to feed the shafts into the tempering furnace and to remove them after tempering is complete. Common types of conveying equipment include mesh-belt, roller-hearth, and chain conveyors, which can be selected based on the shaft dimensions, weight, and production process requirements to ensure smooth conveyance and uniform heating of the shafts within the furnace.

Cooling System: Depending on the requirements of the tempering process, an appropriate cooling method is selected to cool the tempered shafts. Air-cooling systems typically use fans to blow air over the shafts, thereby accelerating heat dissipation; oil-cooling systems, on the other hand, immerse the shafts in an oil bath for cooling, resulting in a relatively faster cooling rate.

Control System: This is the core component of the tempering furnace. In addition to temperature control, it also enables automated control of the conveyor system, cooling system, and other auxiliary equipment, thereby realizing fully automated tempering operations for shafts and rods and enhancing production efficiency and product quality stability.
